About 10 years ago we sold 50 of our camphor laurel cutting boards to a burger bar in Noosa. Hamburgers are put on each board and then a sharp knife is stabbed through the burger and into the timber. This makes it easy for the customers to carry the burgers to their table without burger falling apart. It’s really practical and the presentation is amazing. In busy times each board is used 30-40 times per day.
Now… remember I said that was 10 years ago so that’s thousands of times each board has been used. Two years ago, the owners of the burger bar brought the boards back. We refreshed each board by sanding it and giving it a coat of grapeseed oil and they looked as good as new. I was hoping I could sell him another 50 boards but realistically the revamped boards were as good as the day he bought them.
Personally I have many cutting boards in my cupboard but I have to admit I have my favourites. There is one particular board that I brought home one day because my business partner put it in the pile of factory seconds. He said he didn’t like the grain. I loved the grain and so I brought the board home. That was about 11 years ago and I still love using that board today.
So, we know our boards are durable but are they strong? Well… yesterday we did a test in the shed. Its easier to check out the photos rather
than explain how this test was conducted. Im 80 kilograms (its not all muscle I can assure you) and I put my entire body weight on one board. The board did not break, crack or even bend so I balanced on the same board and it held me without even looking like breaking.
Our plan is to test more cutting boards and increase the weight as we go. Keep your eyes peeled for the results.
So, why are Fab Slabs boards so strong and durable? Well the timber is naturally strong BUT we only use single slab of solid timber to make our cutting boards. Take note next time you are in a restaurant or shop that has laminated cutting boards.
These are cutting boards that are made from smaller bits of timber all glued together. After a few weeks or months of use the glue will start to break down and the cutting boards will start to fall apart.
Do you want a board that is naturally and permanently antibacterial? Do you want a board that is strong and durable and will last for years? Do you want a board made from one single, solid slab of timber? Do you want a board that is 100% Australian Made? If you do then Fab Slabs cutting boards are the way to go.
