FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do we use Camphor laurel to make our cutting boards?
Camphor laurel trees (Cinnamomum camphora) are often viewed as an attractive addition to landscapes; however, their proliferation poses significant ecological challenges that necessitate active management and removal. This species is invasive in many regions, particularly in Australia, where it outcompetes native flora for resources. The dense canopy formed by these trees inhibits sunlight from reaching the forest floor, stifling the growth of understory plants and disrupting local ecosystems. By cutting down camphor laurel trees, we can restore biodiversity and promote healthier ecosystems.
Furthermore, camphor laurels produce allelopathic compounds that inhibit the germination of other plant species. This chemical warfare not only reduces plant diversity but also impacts the animal populations that rely on a diverse range of plants for food and habitat. The removal of these trees allows native species to thrive and reestablish themselves in their natural habitats. In doing so, we enhance ecosystem resilience against pests and diseases that threaten both flora and fauna.
The reason we choose to use camphor to make our cutting boards is because it is a sustainable and environmentally friendly option. Camphor Laurel has been proven to be antibacterial for 10 years. Camphor wood is also known for its natural resistance to insects and decay, making it a long-lasting choice for kitchen items. In addition to its durability, camphor wood also features a beautiful grain and color, making it an attractive and stylish addition to any household. By using camphor wood for our cutting boards, we are not only contributing to the preservation of the environment but also offering our customers a high-quality and aesthetically pleasing product for their homes.

How do I look after my Fab Slabs cutting board?
Simply wash in warm soapy water, oil with grape seed oil whenever it is looking dry and don't put it in the dishwasher.
Will the camphor smell get into my food?
No, having owned and used a camphor laurel cutting board for years and having made and sold thousands of them, we can confidently say that we have never smelt or tasted camphor laurel in the food we prepare and have never had a complaint from anyone about this. The reason is because of the process the wood goes through in kiln drying, the kiln removes the natural oils from the timber which leaves the board smelling beautiful without leaving any scent or taste on your food.
